The game of Mahjong has you pair matching tiles until there are none left. Tiles can be used if they are not under any other tile or one of their sides is not touching another tile. The special season and flower tiles can be paired with any other season or flower tile. Score tons of points by matching tiles quickly, but make sure you don’t run out of moves!
Mahjong History
The matching game commonly known as “Mahjong” or “Mahjong solitaire” was popularized by computer games in the 1980s. This matching game uses tiles from a much older Chinese game, also named Mahjong, that has similar rules to the card game Rummy. This original version of Mahjong developed in China during the 19th century and became popular globally around the 1920s. Since that time, many different regional versions of the game have emerged, such as Japanese mahjong and American mahjong.
Interesting Facts
The word mahjong means “sparrow” in Chinese. The name is said to come from the sounds of clattering tiles resembling that of sparrows. Sparrows are often depicted on Mahjong tiles.
The mahjong tiles feature pictures and symbols that represent circles, bamboo, Chinese characters, dragons, flowers, and the four winds.
The first mahjong sets in America were sold by Abercrombie & Fitch.
